Data corruption is the accidental change of a file or the losing of info that usually occurs during reading or writing. The reason can be hardware or software fail, and as a result, a file can become partially or fully corrupted, so it'll no longer function as it should since its bits will be scrambled or lacking. An image file, for instance, will no longer present an accurate image, but a random mix of colors, an archive will be impossible to unpack since its content will be unreadable, and so on. ZFS checks the digital fingerprint of all files on all drives in real time and in case the checksum of any file differs from what it needs to be, the file system swaps that file with a healthy copy from some other drive in the RAID. There's no other file system which uses checksums, so it's possible for data to be silently corrupted and the bad file to be duplicated on all drives over time, but since that can never happen on a server using ZFS, you won't have to concern yourself with the integrity of your data.

What makes the aforementioned unique is that it uses checksums, or digital identifiers, so as to ensure the integrity of each and every file. When you upload content to your account, it will be kept on several redundant drives being employed in a RAID i.e. the files will be the same on all disks. All copies of a given file will feature the same checksum on all hard disks and ZFS will compare the checksums of the duplicates quickly, so if it registers a mismatch, which will indicate that one of the copies is damaged, it'll replace that file with a good copy from one of the other disks. Even if there's a sudden power loss, the data on the servers won't become corrupted and there won't be any need for a time-consuming system check which other file systems perform after some failure, lengthening the time needed for the server to go back online. ZFS is the only file system which can truly protect your content from silent data corruption.
